Chequerboard Tiles

Chequerboard Tiles

Chequerboard patterns have long been a design staple, offering versatile looks that work in any setting from traditional to contemporary. Here, we look at various approaches from classic to playful and innovative ways to incorporate a much-loved style into your home.

Classic elegance

If you love a classic design, then stick with the traditional black and white combination, such as tiles from our Lucca range. They offer a quietly luxurious look that’s perfect for hallways, bathrooms and kitchens. The key is to maintain the balance perfectly between each colour to achieve a seamless look.

Play with colour

Why settle for monochrome when you can play with colour? Tiles from our Confetti collection are made from porcelain designed to mimic the natural look of small-chip terrazzo and they’re perfect for creating an irreverent chequerboard look. They work really well in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways, but are also great for playrooms, home offices or anywhere you want to inject some fun.

Santona

The Santona tile’s traditional Spanish design replicates a burst of sunshine and its timeless look is set to make it a staple.

Designer style

Why not introduce an innovative twist to the chequerboard pattern. These gorgeous Nina Campbell Rivage tiles prove the look can work as well on walls as it does on floors. Plus, you can get creative by playing with vertical and horizontal lines to create a cross-hatch effect that makes the effect even more striking.

Practical Porcelain

We work with artisans and makers across Europe and the wider world, so were able to find just the right producer to press these very special tiles. Ensuring the milky colours and imperfect textures of the encaustic tiles were fully expressed in the new porcelain collection was all-important to the teams from both Fired Earth and Bert & May and we’re thrilled to say we’ve done just that.

The range is made up of tiles that can be used inside and outdoors, in bathrooms, hallways and other high-traffic areas and – as they’re easy to clean and maintain – they’re a joy to live with too.

A new shape

For a completely different take on the chequerboard trend why not introduce a new shape. Try combining the circle and star shapes of our Blends range to create a bold circle chequerboard effect or use the triangles to create a myriad of tesselations.

Unique chequerboards

You can create a chequerboard look all your own by laying the tiles diagonally. This design can work well in a smaller space as it creates an engaging and dynamic effect. It looks great with one bold colour – such as our green Alalpardo tiles – and another more neutral shade to offer a very modern take on a design classic.

Alalpardo

Our Alalpardo tile may appear simple but it is anything but. Endless tessellations allow you to create a truly unique space.

Luna

Elegant and playful, the gorgeous star pattern of the Luna tile looks fantastic wherever it’s used.

Bolonia

Inspired by an intricate reclaimed design and carefully recreated with contemporary colourways.

Choose your palette

Blue and white is a classic combination that always looks fresh.

A Delft tiled splashback in a plain, white room works wonderfully as a quick style update or why not mix and match our new Copenhagen penny rounds in contrasting colours for a statement-making look?

Add a splash of brass in the form of taps and you have a pulled-together look.

Go for green

Another great style update is green. It’s having a huge moment right now as we are in love with all things natural. Pairing green and cream paint offers a soft modern look and adding in some tiles from our Botanical range, with their nature-inspired designs, will add a fresh, spring-like feel.
