Frequently Asked Questions
Natural slate tiles are made from fine grained rock that heat and pressure transformed into metamorphic stone over millions of years. This gives each tile its layered structure and natural colour variation.
Natural slate tiles are porous to varying degrees, so we recommend sealing them before use and before grouting. A good penetrating sealant protects against staining and makes cleaning easier. Reseal every few years, depending on how porous your slate is.
Slate tiles are well-suited to underfloor heating: the stone conducts heat well. Let the floor warm gradually when you first switch the system on. Rapid temperature changes can stress the stone; follow the manufacturer's guidance.
Slate tiles are available in a range of natural tones, from deep charcoal and blue grey to warm rusty reds, depending on where the stone comes from. Cooler tones suit contemporary spaces well.
