Frequently Asked Questions
Terracotta tiles are made from natural clay, fired at high temperatures. The mineral content of the clay gives each tile its warm tone. You'll notice subtle variation between pieces: that's part of their authentic character, not a flaw.
Terracotta tiles are porous, so sealing is essential before use and before grouting. But the sealant you choose also affects how the finished tile looks. A natural sealant preserves the raw, earthy tone. A wax finish deepens the colour and adds a warm sheen. See our sealing guides here for the full details.
Large terracotta tiles are well suited to kitchen floors, hallways and open plan spaces. A bigger format creates a real sense of space and flow. Your subfloor needs to be level: ask a professional fixer about the right adhesive and laying method.
Terracotta is a warm, earthy tone that works naturally with:
- off-whites and soft ochres
- sage greens and dusty pinks
- aged wood, linen and raw plaster
For a more contemporary feel, cooler neutrals balance the warmth well.
Terracotta tiles are compatible with underfloor heating. When you first switch the system on, let the floor warm up gradually. Rapid temperature changes can damage the tile, so check the manufacturer's guidance and speak to your installer first.
